If you’re self-employed, it’s very wise to take out income protection.

Think about it – if you fell poorly, who’d pay you a salary? Who’d take care of your mortgage? Your credit card payments? Your monthly outgoings?

You don’t have the luxury of an employer to rely on for sickness cover or health insurance – although you might qualify for state benefits.

Income protection insurance is therefore the best solution – it’s a long-term insurance policy designed to help you if you can’t work because you’re ill or injured.

It ensures you continue to receive a regular income until you retire or are able to return to work.

In fact, Which? considers income protection the one policy that every working adult in the UK should have.

So, if you are self-employed and have family responsibilities, are a home owner or have regular outgoings such as credit card payments and council tax, then it’s important to consider taking out an income protection policy.

But, we’re betting that if you’re reading this, and you’re self-employed, you probably don’t have a policy in place.

And that’s because only 4% out of 5 million self-employed workers in the UK have income protection – meaning that 4.4 million do not have any insurance to aid them if they were unable to work.

So when the benefits of income protection are so clear, why do so many self-employed people not have it in place?

Nearly half (42%) either think they are not eligible for the cover, that they don’t need the insurance or don’t see it as a financial priority – despite 76% of self-employed business owners not having employees to fall back on if they were unable to work.

Other common reasons include workers being too busy to search for the best insurance for themselves, or fearing that it may be too expensive.

At KB Mortgage Services, we’re here to dispel these fears.
